Mehdi Nüzhet Çetinbaş was born on June 17, 1954, in Uzuntarla village, İzmit. His grandfather, Thağapsew Kadir, was a Circassian refugee who migrated from the Caucasus to Türkiye in 1905. Growing up in this cultural environment, Çetinbaş developed an early interest in the Caucasus. After completing primary school, he attended Adapazarı Atatürk Middle School and İzmit High School, and in 1973, he enrolled in Istanbul University, Department of Turkish Language and Literature. During his university years, he played an active role in Circassian associations and became the president of the North Caucasus Culture Association in 1977. He also served as the editor-in-chief of the association’s journal, Kuzey Kafkasya.
In 1979, he began working as a literature teacher while continuing his involvement in civil society activities. In 1995, he became one of the founders of the Caucasus Foundation and served as its president for three terms. Between 1999 and 2001, he gave conferences on Chechnya and the Caucasus and participated in media projects. His writing career began in high school in 1971, and since the 2000s, he has been active in online media. His published books include Farewell Circassia (2017) and Portraits from Uzuntarla. He is currently working on a novel depicting the Caucasus during the collapse of the Tsarist Empire. After retiring in 2004, he has been working as an executive in the private sector.
