Gülden Sönmez, born in 1969 in Sivas, graduated from the Faculty of Law at Marmara University. Primarily a lawyer by profession, she is actively involved in civil society and social projects. She has participated in various commissions at the Istanbul branch of MAZLUMDER. Similarly, she has held roles at different levels within the IHH and has taken part in numerous national and international human rights activities. She has also authored many articles and reports in these fields. Dedicated to volunteer work and projects, Gülden Sönmez took on coordination responsibilities in the 2009 Gaza land convoy organized in response to the Gaza blockade. In 2010, she actively participated in the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and was among the passengers on the Mavi Marmara ship, where Israeli forces killed 10 people (IKRA Association, n.d.). She advocates for the human rights of Muslim communities and works through associations to fight for justice. She organized a march with around 10,000 participants to defend the rights of women imprisoned in Syrian prisons and aimed to draw global attention to war-affected women in Syria. In the 2022 Istanbul Bar Association elections, Gülden Sönmez was the first headscarf-wearing candidate for the Bar, although she did not win the election.
