Chandra Muzaffar was born in Bedong (Kedah) in 1947. He graduated from the University of Singapore, where he earned a PhD in Social Sciences. He is a Malaysian Muslim political scientist, Islamic reformist and activist. Chandra Muzaffar is the president of the International Movement for a Just World (JUST), a human rights advocacy organization in Malaysia that works to implement global justice based on universal moral principles. She is also the chairperson of Yayasan 1 Malaysia, a foundation that promotes national unity. Prior to his work with JUST and 1 Malaysia, Muzaffar founded the Movement for National Consciousness (Aliran Kesedaran Negara), a multiracial reform coalition that serves to raise awareness on issues surrounding ethnic relations in Malaysia. As a political scientist, his academic work has largely focused on civilizational dialogue and the critical issues between religion and human rights.
Muzaffar served as the first rector of the Centre for Civilizational Dialogue at the University of Malaysia. He is also the Noordin Sopiee Professor of Global Studies at the University of Science Malaysia (USM) in Penang. The Universality of Islam, Islamic Revival in Malaysia, Human Rights and the New World Order, Alternative Politics for Asia: A Buddhist author-Muslim Dialogue, and has been awarded the Rockefeller Social Science Fellowship in Development Studies for Southeast Asia and the Harry J. Benda Prize. Muzaffar’s publications include numerous books and journal articles on Malaysian politics and international relations, such as “Muslims, Dialogue, Terror” and “Religion and Governance”. In addition, he is the author and editor of 32 books that have been translated into many different languages. His most recent publications are A World in Crisis: Is There a Cure? and Reflections on Malaysian Unity and Other Challenges have been widely acclaimed in the Islamic world. For 14 years, he founded an ethnic social reform group called Aliran Kesedaran Negara (ALIRAN), which he led.
Today, apart from his role in JUST, Muzaffar sits on the board of several international NGOs concerned with social justice and civilizational dialogue. Muzaffar is Professor and Director of the Centre for Civilizational Dialogue at the University of Malaya and Professor of Global Studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia. He is also the recipient of several international awards for his social activism. He has published extensively on civilizational dialogue, international politics, religion, human rights and Malaysian society. He is the author and editor of more than 20 books in English and Malay, and many of his writings have been translated into other languages. Muzaffar’s major publications include Protector, Islamic Revival in Malaysia, Human Rights and the New World Order, Rights-Religion and Reform, Global Ethics or Global Hegemony, Hegemony: Justice; Peace and Religion and Governance.”
