Jaser Albarghouthi was born on 28 June 1973 in the town of Kobar, located in the Ramallah and al-Bireh Governorate. In 2003, while being held in Israeli prisons, he obtained his high school diploma. During his imprisonment, he enrolled at the Open University of Tel Aviv. He later received an associate degree in Business Administration from Al-Quds University in 2016, and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from al-Ummah College in 2020.
Al-Barghouti joined Hamas in 1989. He subsequently became a member of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades and served as one of the officials responsible for the brigades in the Ramallah and al-Bireh Governorate. In addition to the Kobar Cell, he led the Silwad and al-Mazra‘a al-Sharqiyya cells, as well as three sub-units responsible for reconnaissance and logistical support.
During his time in Israeli prisons, al-Barghouti became one of Hamas’s prominent cadres and assumed various leadership roles within the prisons. Following the end of his imprisonment, he assumed responsibility for Hamas’s West Bank National Relations Department. He has also been active in the field of civil society, overseeing the Wafa al-Ahrar Association, which supports released prisoners, and the Jusur al-Amal Association, which works on the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Sheikh Ahmed Yassin International Foundation.
Today, al-Barghouti is regarded as one of Hamas’s leading figures and serves as the official responsible for the Foreign Relations Office of the West Bank Region.
