Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Ersay is a faculty member in the Department of Turkish-Islamic Arts History at Ankara University's Faculty of Divinity, where she has also been serving as the Chair of the Department since September 2022. She completed her undergraduate studies at Ankara University in 2006. She earned her master’s degree in 2011 with a thesis titled "Local Style in Religious Buildings in Ankara," and her Ph.D. in 2017 with a dissertation titled "Art Patronage of the Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II," both specializing in the field of Turkish-Islamic Arts History.
In 2019, she conducted academic research as a visiting scholar at the Tabriz Islamic Art University in Iran. Her academic interests focus on the issue of depiction and the perception of visual culture in Islamic art, late Ottoman art and architecture, Ottoman art patronage, 19th-century Ottoman cultural life, diplomacy, and the history of photography. She is particularly recognized for her work exploring the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of Ottoman modernization through the lens of art policies, visual archives, and photography collections of the Sultan Abdulhamid II era.
She has presented numerous papers at national and international scientific meetings and has published books, book chapters, and academic articles in the fields of Turkish-Islamic arts history, Ottoman visual culture, and the history of photography. Furthermore, she has developed scientific projects in partnership with various national and international institutions, and has carried out academic and cultural collaborations across different countries. She is proficient in English and Arabic.
