Mehmet Özay

He was born in Üsküdar in 1969. Following his primary and secondary education, he graduated from Marmara University's Department of English Language Teaching in 1997. He completed his Master's degree in 2000 at Marmara University’s Institute of Middle Eastern and Islamic Countries, under the supervision of Dr. Tayfun Amman, with a thesis titled Anthony Giddens and His Sociology. In 2002, he began his doctoral studies in the Department of Sociology of Religion within the Department of Theology at the same university's Graduate School of Social Sciences. He defended his doctoral dissertation, titled Secularization-Modernization-Religion Relations in Contemporary Sociology, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Köse in 2006. During this period, focusing heavily on writing and translation work, Özay's publications appeared in prominent journals of the era.
Having lived in Aceh (Indonesia) and Malaysia since late 2006, Özay taught in relevant departments at IAIN Ar-Raniry and Syiah Kuala University in Aceh, Indonesia, between 2007 and 2010. During his time in Aceh, he conducted research on Turkish-Aceh relations as well as Acehnese history and sociology. From 2010 to 2013, he worked as a research faculty member at the Faculty of Education, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Within this framework, he was awarded two research grants by the UTM Research Management Centre for projects on colonial-era education, and Malay language and nationalism. Alongside this, he continued his research on traditional Islamic education in the Malay world, as well as Acehnese history and sociology. Between 2013 and 2017, Özay served as the regional representative for the North News Agency (TRT) and Anadolu Agency in Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. Closely following regional developments in culture, politics, and international relations during his tenure, his analytical news pieces on the Malay world and the Asia-Pacific region were published by Anadolu Agency, dunyabulteni.net, and dunyabizim.com. From 2017 to 2021, he taught in the Department of Sociology at Ibn Haldun University in Istanbul. During this period, he presented papers written in Turkish, English, and Malay at various national and international conferences and published them in relevant academic and general-interest journals.

Recently, he has continued his academic work focusing primarily on Colonial-Era Education, Malay Language and Nationalism, Traditional Religious Education in the Malay World, Acehnese History and Sociology, Turkish-Malay Relations, and Southeast Asian History. Since 2022, he has been serving as a research scholar at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in Kuala Lumpur.
