Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani (1952-2026) was a Qatari statesman who served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential leaders in the country’s modern history. The father of Qatar’s current Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Sheikh Hamad played a pivotal role in transforming Qatar from a small Gulf state into a regional and global actor during his time in office.

Born in Doha in 1952, Sheikh Hamad completed his early education in Qatar before attending the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. After graduating in 1971, he joined the Qatari Armed Forces, where he held a number of senior defense positions before becoming Crown Prince.

Sheikh Hamad became Emir of Qatar in 1995 after assuming power from his father, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani. Under his leadership, Qatar underwent a profound economic transformation. By strategically developing its vast natural gas reserves, the country became one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Revenues from the energy sector were invested in infrastructure, international investments, and ambitious projects that significantly enhanced Qatar’s global profile.

His reign is also widely seen as the period during which Qatar emerged as an influential player in diplomacy, media, and culture. The country’s successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup became one of the defining milestones that elevated Qatar’s international visibility. Beyond transforming Qatar itself, Sheikh Hamad made support for oppressed peoples a central principle of his foreign policy. Nowhere was this commitment more evident than in his steadfast support for the Palestinian cause.

Sheikh Hamad’s 2012 visit to Gaza was widely regarded as a historic turning point. By becoming the first head of state to officially visit Gaza after Hamas took control of the territory in 2007, the visit was seen as breaking Hamas’s political isolation. It also marked the implementation of reconstruction assistance first pledged at the 2009 Doha Summit. Major investments were launched in housing, healthcare, education, and infrastructure, while Qatar announced an aid package worth approximately $400 million for the reconstruction of Gaza’s infrastructure, schools, and road network.

In 2013, Sheikh Hamad voluntarily abdicated in favor of his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, becoming one of the few rulers in the history of the Gulf monarchies to transfer power of his own accord. The decision was widely viewed as an important step toward ensuring a smooth generational transition of leadership in Qatar.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passed away on 12 July 2026 at the age of 74. He will be remembered not only by the people of Qatar but also by millions whose hearts he touched as a visionary leader whose influence transcended borders and as a steadfast advocate for justice.
